Autumn is here and the dark nights are most definitely creeping up on us. From seasonal veggies to pumpkin spiced lattes, we all love indulging in the cosy autumn delights during the colder months.However, scarily, it’s estimated that 1.4 million tonnes of food is thrown out from Scottish hospitality businesses every year- around 1 in 6 meals. Preventing this food waste from your business could not only save you money but enhance your customers’ experience.
Offering a take-home service for leftovers helps reduce waste while allowing your customer to enjoy this food later and, with our research suggesting two fifths of us are too shy to ask for a ‘doggy bag’, providing this as part of your service helps prevent any embarrassment.
Zero Waste Scotland introduced ‘Good to Go’ in 2014 (a few Halloweens ago) with the aim to tackle plate waste and change the culture around leftovers, making it normal to take this food home after a meal. Since its introduction, Good to Go has been very well received by both business owners and consumers, with some restaurants reporting an increase in sales from those diners who take additional food home to enjoy later- instead of rolling home like a stuffed pumpkin*.
Small and medium sized businesses in Scotland are encouraged to sign up to receive their free starter pack containing all the materials needed to immediately offer this spooktacular service, reducing your food waste and saving you money.
Around one-third of waste produced by restaurants in Belfast comes from food that customers have left on their plates.
Belfast City Council's initiative now allows participating restaurants in Belfast to provide a 'Bring-home-box' that allows customers to take their leftovers home and allows businesses to cut down on landfill waste and save money.
The box is compostable and can be recycled in your food waste bin. So next time your out for a meal - ask for a 'Bring-home-box'.

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency has published a short guide to the duty of care responsibilities including advice and information for waste producers, carriers and those accepting, storing and treating waste.
Any person intending to alter the use or management of areas of uncultivated or semi-natural land must obtain prior approval from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA).
